Clogged drain: what to do

Clogged and clogged drain: what to do

In everyday life, using our bathroom, as usual, it can sometimes happen to have problems with the drain and not be able to send all the impurities into the sewer system.

The cause can very often be solved with a few moves, other times a more complicated intervention is required to free the pipes.

What is the drain piping

Inside each plumbing-sewer system of any home, there are several pipes that, connected in a special way, guarantee the removal of impurities from your bathroom through the sewer connection, which is a large pipe that reaches the sewer system of your city or neighborhood after having collected the impurities coming from the drain pipes, connected to it and coming from the sanitary ware installed in the bathrooms of the house.

So the drain pipes are those pipes that connect our sanitary ware to the sewer, allowing the removal of organic substances dragged by running water.

Why is the drain clogging

The drain pipe of any type of bathroom fixture, whether it is a toilet or a shower tray, rather than a sink is often subject to clogging as the organic substances that are sucked in sometimes settle inside the pipe and cannot reach the sewer, also obstructing the other impurities and thus forming an accumulation.

This situation causes a slow flow of running water through the pipe. In this way, if there is a major blockage, the water level will rise as soon as it remains open for a short time.

Let's take a practical example: very often it can happen that, while taking a shower, running water drags the hair down the drain, and these, for various reasons, get stuck inside the pipe and prevent the regular flow of water. What will happen will be the continuous rise in the water level for the entire time you take a shower.

Faced with this drawback, there may be several solutions, described in the next paragraph.

Clogged drain: what to do

The solutions to the clogged drain problem are different and vary depending on whether the pipeline is clogged very compactly or in a lighter way.

For light obstructions it is sufficient to use several simple tools, one alternative to the other:

plunger: it is the most classic object to solve this type of problem, it costs a few euros and is very simple to use. Its function is to remove the air inside the pipe and bring the accumulation that caused the obstruction near the drain hole.

iron wire: if the clogged drain is that of the shower, you can use an iron wire that is flexible and long enough to reach the point of traffic jam, moving the sedimented hair, hooking the accumulation that has been generated.

bicarbonate and citric acid: one of the most effective solutions is to pour the first glass of lemon juice and then a glass of water and bicarbonate into the drain pipe. This chemical solution will fight the traffic jam, with a good chance of clearing the pipe.

Those just illustrated are suitable remedies for situations of a less serious clogged drain and consisting of small traffic jams.

If, on the other hand, a very important obstruction has occurred, it is necessary to call a plumber, who will carry out a video inspection to understand what the cause is and then intervene on the pipe.
